Kostroma Oblast is a constituent entity of the Russian Federation and is part of the Central Federal District. Area: 60 211 km ². Population: 648,157 people. (2017) Borders: in the north — with the Vologda region, in the south — with the Ivanovo and Nizhny Novgorod regions, in the west — with Yaroslavl, in the east — with the Kirov region.    
Kostroma has always been the cultural center of the country. It was from Kostroma that such established Russian traditions as carnival went.
