Privolzhsky Federal District (PFD) is the federal district of the Russian Federation (RF) formed by the Decree of the President of the Russian Federation of May 13, 2000.
The Okrug includes 14 constituent entities of the Russian Federation. The Volga Federal District and the Volga region are often confused, however these are different concepts – part of the Lower Volga (Volgograd and Astrakhan regions) refers to the Southern Federal District, Upper Volga to the Central (Tver, Moscow, Yaroslavl, Ivanovo and Kostroma regions), while the PFD includes subjects geographically located in the Urals and the Urals (Bashkortostan, Udmurtia, Perm Krai, Orenburg and Kirov regions) and Central Russia (Mordovia, Penza region).
The district’s territory is 6.06% of the territory of the Russian Federation. The county has no access to the World Ocean.
The population of the PFD is 29 636 574 people. (2017) (20.19% of the population of Russia). The basis of the population is made up by citizens (71.75 %), which is somewhat lower than the national average (74.27 %).
The administrative center and the largest city of the district – Nizhny Novgorod.
