The region was formed on December 7, 1934 by separation from the Middle Volga region, in the period from 1938 to 1957 was called the Chkalov region. The administrative center is the city of Orenburg. The area of the Orenburg region is 123 702 km ², on this indicator it occupies the 29th place in Russia. The territory of the region covers the south-eastern outskirts of the East European Plain, the southern tip of the Urals and the southern Trans-Urals.
