In the south it borders with the Volgograd region, in the west — with the Voronezh and Tambov regions, in the north — with the Penza, Samara, Ulyanovsk and Orenburg regions, in the east passes the state border of Russia with Kazakhstan. The total length of the border is over 350 km. It was formed on December 5, 1936 by the transformation of the Saratov region.
