The Republic of Tatarstan (Tatarstan Republic, Tatarstan Respublikası, Tatarstan, unofficially Tatarstan) is a constituent entity of the Russian Federation, a republic (state) in its composition. It is part of the Volga Federal District and is part of the Volga Economic Region. Formed on the basis of Decree of the All-Russian Central Executive Committee and Council of People’s Commissars dated May 27, 1920 as the Autonomous Tatar Socialist Soviet Republic.
According to clause 2 of Article 1 of the Constitution of the Republic of Tatarstan of 1992, the names “Republic of Tatarstan” and “Tatarstan” are equivalent.
The capital is Kazan.
It borders with the Kirov, Ulyanovsk, Samara and Orenburg regions, the Republic of Bashkortostan, the Republic of Mari El, the Udmurt Republic and the Chuvash Republic.
State languages: Tatar, Russian. Chuvash language is also common.
